Melissa’s passion is people; she loves every aspect of working and being with others. She has been happily married to her best friend and biggest fan, Garth Porterfield (Wolfy) for over 17 years and is the mother of 3 amazing kids…all the apple of her eye! Melissa played a variety of sports as a child but focused on softball & volleyball in high school and continued her volleyball career throughout college. Melissa’s first introduction to CrossFit was against her will in 2011. “My husband was tired of me complaining about my weight and how out of shape I was, so he signed me up at a local gym. I was MAD to say the least…I was afraid of looking stupid, not being able to keep up with everyone in the class, & just really intimidated! I played sports but was unfamiliar with Olympic lifting & gymnastics so I was dreading going. My first day was brutal and I was sorer than I had ever been in my life but I knew I had found something that I would stick with for life.” Melissa’s goals now are to be the best wife, mother, teacher, cheerleader, coach & inspiration that she can possibly be. Fitness changed her life forever!

GARTH PORTERFIELD

Co-Owner of Obsidian Strong, Inc.
Arroyo Grande High School Head Sports Performance Coach
Level 1 CrossFit Trainer
USAW Level 1 Sports Performance Coach
USAW Club Coach
High School Varsity Football Coach

Garth is a lifelong athlete who played three major sports, Football, Soccer and Track. During that time he had numerous individual accolades (Hurdles/Pole Vault), was a part of 4 Championship teams (Soccer/Football/Track) and was asked to participate in the Olympic Development Program (Soccer). That was also the time he was introduced to the benefit's and importance of strength and conditioning. This also started in motion a passion for developing and fixing body mechanics and movement patterns in athletes young and old, no matter their athletic background.  That passion has provided him the opportunity to work with Sport Performance Programs such as Stanford, as well as an internship with Cal Poly Strength & Conditioning.  Garth now shares his passion by helping people become the best versions of themselves, as well as shaping our youth as a High School coach.
